"The Lake Shaokatan Lakeshore Association was formed in 1986 by a group of
concerned lakeshore owners. These owners were worried about the increasing occurrence
and severity of algae blooms happening on Lake Shaokatan. After forming the association,
they began the process of attempting to restore the water quality that Lake Shaokatan once
possessed. Like most shallow lakes, Lake Shaokatan has been subjected to excessive nutrient
(phosphorus) and sediment loads. Extensive testing has shown that Lake Shaokatan has the
inherent capability to maintain far superior water quality than that which it currently has.
The Lake Shaokatan Lakeshore Association has been part of ongoing education and research
to determine the best course of action to take to help the lake "clean itself". Countless hours
of in-kind labor, thousands of dollars in matching funds, and a willingness to cooperate with
local and state agencies towards that goal continue to be the driving force behind the
association. As landowners, we too realize that it is our responsibility to hold ourselves to
the same standards as surrounding landowners. It is our goal to have all persons involved in
any way with Lake Shaokatan to strive towards the one common goal, better water quality.
Lakeshore landowners are reminded to follow lakeshore zoning ordinances and practice
good fertilizer and lawn management. We also are required by law to have up to date septic
systems, proper setbacks, and maintain shorelines within the limits of the zoning ordinance.
These rules are in place to protect and maintain the water quality of Lake Shaokatan, and the
Lake Shaokatan Lake Shaokatan Lakeshore Association both supports and takes an active part
in the interpretation of the rules.
Our group meets monthly during the summer on the 3rd Saturday of the month.
Typically we have our meetings at Picnic Point County Park, in case of inclement weather
we hold them at the Shaokatan Town Hall located that the intersection of Lincoln County
Road 16 and County Road 104. Please browse the website to learn more, get some history,
and find some links and contact names. We also welcome "Friends of Lake Shaokatan" to our
meetings. Join us.
